Do Dental Implants Hurt? Truth from Our Waxhaw Implant Dentists Waxhaw, NC
Dr. Chokshi with his patient. Dental visit.

Are you considering dental implants but aren’t sure if the process will be unbearable? The myth that dental implants are a painful and uncomfortable procedure is just that–a myth. While you may experience some discomfort during the recovery process, the procedure itself is not painful.

If you are considering dental implants, don’t let the fear of pain hold you back. Talk to one of our Waxhaw implant dentists about any concerns you may have, and they can provide you with more information about the procedure and what to expect.

The Procedure

The most common fear surrounding dental implants is the pain during the procedure. However, the truth is that the procedure is not as painful as many people believe. Typically, dental implant surgery is completed under local or general anesthesia, meaning you will not feel any pain during the surgery. In some cases, dental sedation may also be used to help you relax and feel more comfortable.

During the procedure, the implant dentist will make a small incision in the gum to access the jawbone. Then, the implant will be carefully placed into the jawbone, and the gum will be stitched back up. It’s important to note that most patients report feeling little to no pain during the procedure.

The Recovery Period

It is normal to experience some discomfort after a dental implant procedure. Each person experiences pain differently and for a different length of time. The discomfort may only last a few days for some people, but for others, it may last up to a week.

After the surgery, you may experience some swelling and discomfort in the treated area. This is a normal part of the healing process and can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication. Also, our implant dentist may prescribe medication to help with any discomfort.

Fortunately, the discomfort will gradually decrease as you heal. If you experience severe pain or discomfort that lasts for more than a week, it is important to contact your implant dentist.

Wise Recovery Tips From Our Waxhaw Implant Dentists

While the discomfort after a dental implant procedure is usually mild, there are some things you can do to manage it and make the recovery process more comfortable.

  • Follow Post-Operative Instructions: Your dentist will provide you with post-operative instructions to follow after your dental implant procedure. It is important to follow these instructions carefully to ensure proper healing and minimize discomfort. This may include taking prescribed medication, avoiding certain foods, and keeping the treated area clean.
  • Apply Ice Packs: Applying ice packs to the treated area can help reduce swelling and discomfort. Wrap an ice pack in a towel and apply it to the outside of your cheek for 15-20 minutes at a time. Repeat this process every few hours for the first 24-48 hours after the procedure.
  • Eat Soft Foods: Your mouth may be sore after the dental implant procedure, so it is important to stick to soft foods for the first few days. This can include foods like mashed potatoes, soup, and smoothies. Avoid hard, crunchy, or sticky foods that can irritate the treated area.
  • Avoid Smoking and Alcohol: Smoking and alcohol can slow down the healing process and increase the risk of complications after a dental implant procedure. It is best to avoid smoking and alcohol for at least a week after the surgery.
  • Keep Your Head Elevated: Keeping your head elevated can help reduce swelling and discomfort. Try to sleep with your head propped up on pillows for the first few nights after the procedure.

Don’t Let Myths Meddle with Your Mouth

Dental implants are a safe and effective solution for replacing missing teeth. While there may be some discomfort during the recovery process, the procedure itself is not painful. With proper care and following post-operative instructions, you can minimize any discomfort and enjoy the benefits of a beautiful and functional smile.

Don’t let the myth of dental implants being painful hold you back from achieving a healthy and confident smile. We offer sedation as an add-on service to help ease any procedure anxiety.  Talk to our Waxhaw implant dentist today to learn more about your tooth replacement options.
